VP Saulos Chilima is accused of accepting money and other goods in exchange for awarding govt contracts.Malawi’s Anti-Corruption Bureau has arrested the country’s Vice President Saulos Chilima in excess of corruption allegations, it reported on Friday.
Chilima is accused of accepting cash and other items in trade for awarding governing administration contracts, the ACB claimed in a statement.

The ACB assertion said Chilima was rewarded for aiding Xaviar Limited and Malachitte FZE, two providers connected to British businessman Zuneth Sattar, to gain contracts.
The watchdog has been investigating Sattar and other general public officers in Malawi more than alleged plundering of condition sources by influencing awarding of contracts by way of the country’s public procurement technique, it said.
The ACB arrested Chilima “on allegation that involving March 2021 and October 2021, he acquired edge in form of money” amounting to $280,000 and other products “from Zuneth Sattar as a reward”, its statement said.

NCA did not quickly reply to a request for remark on Friday, and Sattar could not be arrived at, the Reuters news agency said.
Previously this calendar year, Malawi’s President Lazarus Chakwera dissolved his full cupboard on costs of corruption in opposition to three serving ministers. Several ministers and former ministers have now been arrested in link with this case, in which 53 community officials have been accused of acquiring revenue from Sattar involving March and October 2021.

In 2020, Chilima partnered with Chakwera to earn the presidential election re-run, sweeping to victory on an anti-corruption platform.
